Us vs Them is a new clubbing venture by a young promoter and DJ who’s already been around the block. Barry Farrell – who has a list of credits on the alternative Dublin dance scene since 2007 – is heading up the weekly Thursday club in The Mercantile, Dame Lane starting this month.
Things just get bigger and better for Irish-Canadian duo Deadbots, as their strongest release yet is peppered with heavyweight remixes. The ‘Girl On Fire/My Guitar’ double header features top class re-works ranging from Sharam Jay’s electro-house groover, to the heavy metal disco of Tom Deluxx and Baxen.
“We’re really happy with the diversity of the mixes,” says Paul, “particularly the straight up dance remixes. Nina and I never saw ourselves making ‘down with the kids’ club bangers. So it’s great to have that stuff as well,” Details on the release and the latest on the band at www.myspace.com/deadbots.
The last huge 2010 festival for clubbers, Planet Love WKD, happens this weekend September 10 and 11 at The King's Hall Showground, Belfast with the usual bumper contingent of Irish DJs from the harder end of the spectrum. Beside big names like Fatboy Slim, Armin Van Buuren and Eddie Halleriwell (and a debut Irish appearance from Run DMC’s Reverend Run), there’s John O’Callaghan (more about John on page XX), John Gibbons, Mog and one of Ireland's premier urban/hip hop DJs, Frank Jez. For more on the festival, have a look at www.planetlovemusic.com. And to see Fatboy in action last month at the SW4 Festival showing off his incredible new laser light show, search Fatboy SW4 on YouTube, and prepare to be blinded!
On a more low-key note, some underground dance is to be found at this weekend’s Temple House Festival at Ballinmore, Sligo. Although primarily a rock 'n trad affair, there is electronic and club music from the Clampdown DJs, up and coming Motion Control, Donal Dineen and a live show from Arveene & Misk.
After a string of well-received remixes, the duo have stepped it up a notch with their thundering, rave-generated new release. ‘Eavesdropping’ is out now on Bang Gang 12” Records and can be picked up at Beatport, iTunes and all the usual online music stores.
Sunday clubbing in Dublin is about to be given an extra dropkick with the return of ElektroShock on Sunday September 12, this time in The ThinkTank, after popping up in the likes of Ulysses and Andrews Lane Theatre over the last year. 2010 guests have included party monster DJ Tom Middleton (pictured here at Ulysses earlier this year). More big-name guests are planned along with a fine line-up of local spinners.
Promoter Vickie Algay reckons: “If I wanted to make money, I’d run a student night on a Thursday. I’m more into running a fun night for people my age who will enjoy the music. And I love the Sunday buzz!”.

“We plan on having DJs one week and bands on the other. We’re hoping it’ll be something a bit different,” he says.
All DJs and producers looking to build on their skills take note, Dublin studio workshop RealSound are enrolling this weekend for a range of electronic music related courses. In particular, there’s a course specialising in the dance music makers' favourite tool Ableton and all courses promise to help the newbie and the more advanced studio terrorist reach for that big club hit. The studio is located in Dublin’s Smithfield area and more info on the courses can be found at www.realsound.ie.
