Dublin producer graces legend's latest mix CD. And other stories...
Fatboy Slim, who plays Oxegen in July, has given his official seal of approval to 'Rainbows', the forthcoming single from Detboi, by including it as the finishing track on his latest mix CD, The Legend Returns.
Describing the tune as "kick ass disco for the ladies to get lost in music and the boys scream like trannies", Fatboy sites the Crumlin producer among dance aristocracy including Basement Jaxx and his own forthcoming single 'Machines Can Do The Work'. Detboi described the news as "a Kevin and Perry moment". The mix is available with the current issue of Mixmag.
Another Irish dance artist getting the thumbs up from high places is Kormac and his Big Band. Glastonbury 2010 saw Kormac twice perform at the festival with the full band and also knock out a DJ set on the Sunday. Kormac keeps the bar high supporting downtempo supremo DJ Shadow at Tripod next Monday July 5. Keep up with with him at djkormac.com.
Closer to home, The Mystik Fest continues to expand at a rapid rate – at the last count the dance mega-festival will host seven stages with almost 100 DJs and live dance acts, mainly homegrown and topped off with the likes of X-Press 2 and Paul Woolford. Being held in The Thornhill Complex in Tullow, Carlow on July 31, the event is also in aid of Barnardos, Carlow. Tickets are available from mystikfest.com.
The dance community up north looked like it was about to take a major hit with the news late last month that CDC Leisure had gone into administration. However, the pub chain - who own two long-time homes of dance music, The Limelight and The Spring & Airbrake – insists it will be business as usual, with a spokesperson for the KPMG Administrators John Hansen claiming: "The Limelight and The Spring & Airbrake will continue to trade as normal while we assess all potential future options". The news comes amid speculation as to the future of the UK's premier dance club Fabric, which has also gone into administration and is currently looking for a new owner. Fabric's sister club Matter closed indefinitely last month.
As the future of the big clubs looks cloudy, the bring-your-own-booze clubnight trend in unusual venues around Dublin continues to thrive. This month, Space54 hosts another PopUp art/techno hybrid pre-party featuring DeFekt live and a host of local tech DJs on July 16. Quiet Riot, a new indie-dance crossover night, starts up in the basement of the Clarendon House tomorrow night and Subject's third birthday party in Twisted Pepper on July 24 will host A Midsummer Night's Party at a secret location. The Ibiza club season gets underway this month, and once again gets infiltrated with Irish acts, with Northern Irish veteran Col Hamilton joining the line up for Judge Jules' Judgement Sundays. The Lush resident will play during the prestigious closing week on Sunday September 5. A handful of other Irish acts bound for the white island are TBC. Watch this space!
