POTENTIAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR FROM IRISH DUO
In many walks of life success can be attributed to a sound understanding of the values of simplicity. Female/male lead-vocals, ethereal harmonies, backed by a couple of acoustic guitars with the occasional banjo and lap-steel thrown is about as simple as it gets. With such simplicity, however, often comes vulnerability.
Carol Anne McGowan and Tim V. Smyth needn’t worry about that: within these uncomplicated parameters Hidden Highways have crafted a beautiful LP of refined Americana.
The Clare/Donegal duo lay down the marker with the gorgeous opening tracks ‘Empire Of Gold’ and ‘The Western Line’. McGowan’s irresistible Karen Dalton-like vocals take centre stage on the latter against a backdrop of lush harmonies and gentle strings.
That approach is repeated – with singing duties alternated – throughout, often to breathtaking effect, as Old Hearts Reborn unfurls and meanders, telling tales of love and loss, present and future, all without rush or fuss. This is pure songwriting at its absolute best.
Out On A Limb’s Windings pushed Delorentos all the way for the 2012 Choice Prize. With this stunning and understated debut from Smyth and McGowan, the hard-working Limerick-based label could find itself in the shake-up once again for 2013.
Key Track: 'The Western Line'
