A stuffed-full and truly delish chocolate box of small but perfectly formed releases: the debut EP from the pretty/violent Holy Ghost Fathers; a Road Relish split single from Nina Hynes and Adrian Crowley; and - just in the nick of time! - the compilation A Quiet Riot: Songs To Save Your Life
Bless us Fathers for we have sinned... Sligo/Dublin quartet the Holy Ghost Fathers release their debut EP Angelus Bell this week with a live bash with the Nervous Penneys and Cork-based instrumental outfit Weevil. The lead track is a hollered slo-mo garage rock number tainted with tantalising alt. country flourishes and boasting some killer lines such as “bundled in the boot in his best Sunday suit and beaten til he confessed.” All this and two other original tracks on the one package and not a rugby ball or collection box for the missions in sight. Cork noiseniks Cyclefly have just released their sophomore album Craze. Guest vocals duties on ‘Karma Killer’ are handled by none other than Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington. Judging by the phenomenal paludits their Generation Sap debut garnered in the hard rock and metal press, the Southern rockers could well be blasting with the best of ‘em all over the world in the not too distant future. Linkin Park’s Chester leaves no room for doubt in his enthusiastic appraisal: “Cyclefly are one of my favourite bands and their new record is one of the best I’ve heard in a long time. And if you don’t like it YOU SUCK!”
The next Road Relish Singles Club release will be shared by Adrian Crowley and Nina Hynes and should see the light of day in late February/early March. Keep an eye and ear out for details of a launch show in due course...

Acoustic based artists who feel they are proficent enough to play a twenty minute set or thereabouts at Galway’s Taibhdhearc Theatre should drop a line to [email protected] for further details of the Turner Sports and Social Club, a new venture upstairs in Toner’s Pub, Baggot Street which will feature four or five acts each night. Johnny Pyro, Miles Judge, Francie and Terry McGuinness did the launch honours at the end of January. The next Sports and Social engagement will be on Thursday March 21.
Hats off to local heroes The Last Post, David Kitt and The Reindeer Section for making the final cut on the wonderful A Quiet Riot – Songs To Save Your Life compilation being handled by Play It Again Sam. Kelly, Kittser, Lightbody and company rub shoulders with the illustrious likes of Badly Drawn Boy, Low, Lampchop, The Beta Band, Nick Drake, Oasis, The Delgados and the Pernice Brothers on a selection of gentle beauties that forms a wonderful Valentine pressie for just about anyone, quiet being the new loud and all that. And if you’re single, what better way to enjoy the dreaded day than wallow in Kittser’s sweet boy tones before going out and getting totally and utterly stewed. Have a good one!
