Wow. No really. Wow. For all the recent talk of ‘art’ rock, this is the real deal, at least in terms of Antony’s day job as a New York performance artist. Yet far from being some sort of Yoko Ono style embarrassment, 'Hope There’s Someone' is a beautifully simple, proper song. Pared down to just voice and piano, it still manages to pack more of an emotional punch than the rest of the records on this page put together.

Yet far from being some sort of Yoko Ono style embarrassment, 'Hope There’s Someone' is a beautifully simple, proper song. Pared down to just voice and piano, it still manages to pack more of an emotional punch than the rest of the records on this page put together. Antony’s vocals manage to recall both Paul Robeson and Billie Holliday and are so impossibly, heartbreakingly sad that this fragile tale of loneliness and fear of the great beyond remains with you long after the final chord has faded. You won’t be able to bounce along to it on a Friday night yet it truly is an extraordinary experience.
