Who knew robotic funk could be so emotive?
Talking Heads famously told us popular culture should Stop Making Sense. Now, Hot Chip are questioning the whole point of pop culture in the first place.
The London outfit’s sixth album kicks off with the irresistible lead single ‘Huarache Lights’, which ranks as one of their best songs and is a contender for track of the year. The knockout chorus – “Replace us with the things that do the job better” – could be an anthem for uncertain times as technology displaces and disrupts careers and livelihoods.
Since the release of One Life Stand, Hot Chip have always shown more emotional intelligence and insight than most. Why Make Sense? confirms that they’re one of the best British groups around, having consistently authored brilliant pop music since the turn of the millennium.
Cuts like ‘Love is the Future’, ‘Cry for You’ and the hypnotic ‘Need You Now’ refine and redefine their emotive robotic funk.
It all comes to a beautiful close on the title track, terrifically showcased on a UK election-themed parody website, which looked like the inner workings of the satirical mind of Chris Morris.
