A fresh crop of young Irish singer-songwriters have emerged in recent years – resonating, seemingly effortlessly, with their peers through disarmingly frank, relatable lyrics, a DIY ethos, and captivating vocals, in videos often recorded from their bedrooms. At the forefront of this wave is Maynooth’s Nell Mescal, who released her debut single, ‘Graduating’, in July, aged just 19. A phenomenal talent in her own right, with over one million likes on TikTok, there’s clearly something in the Mescal genes – having previously teamed up with her famous brother Paul for a stunning Villagers cover.
