Cian Godfrey contributes to the Hot Press Mental Health Special
Cian Godfrey,
Somebody’s Child
As a group we have become a kind of support system for ourselves – having that connection is really important. Having dealt with a lot of this stuff myself, you do develop your own tactics, like educating yourself on what’s happening in your mind when you are struggling with mental health.
It’s not as easy as I’m making it out to seem, but if you get to a place where you can learn, then do so. Read up on it. Information is the most important thing that can guide you out of a tricky place. Now, I’ve got my own support system in my head on how to deal with certain things. So that’s been a great help. Obviously, being active, trying to better yourself and having a purpose are important as well.
As I get older, I definitely look after myself more and will continue to try to do so on tour. Meditation is something I do a few times a week and I exercise a lot now. It’s not for looking well: it’s purely for my mental health and dealing with the anxiety I’ve dealt with since I’ve become an adult. Eating well is really important, drinking lots of water, keeping things in check and making sure you’re not going to go off and have a bad day – and that you feel good. Stuff that I would have scoffed at when I was 21, I need to do now to take care of myself.
