Conor Dwyer visited Chernobyl and returned with some haunting photos.
Nearly 30 years after the catastrophic accident at the Chernobyl nuclear plant, photo-adventurer Conor Dwyer visited it and the surrounding city. In our current issue, he gives us his report.
Dwyer says the most affecting part of his itinerary was visiting Pripyat's massive school (pictured).
"There's still artwork and maps of the world on the walls," he says. "The teachers' desks are laid out for the next day's lesson. You had to carry your Geiger counter around the whole time. The hospital was a no-go, because that was where the first respondents were sent. The next day we went to the countryside, where some elderly people have returned to live. Originally, the residents settled in Kiev and other nearby towns. But there were a couple of hundred people who refused to leave or who came back."
