Battling monsters and mythical demons, Jack O'Rourke's latest track 'Myth' faces love's greatest obstacles head on with a dramatic piano ballad and powerful vocal arrangement.
With instrumentation that, when broken down into separate components, seems remarkably simple, yet when brought together creates a cinematic and monumental production.
A haunting use of piano mixes well with a dramatic guitar, creating a masterpiece that feels ever so grand and spectacular.
The clever lyricism tackles a subject matter that is rarely explored in music, particularly in the Irish scene. The lyrics, ' Don’t be listening to the angel on your left side, he’s holier than thou/ Don’t be tempted by the demons on your right, they’re gonna reap when they sow/ It’ll be our finest moment, we’ll carve a myth, that those kids will learn at school / About 2 ancient lovers, who loved by breaking all the rules ' draw the listener into a story that is thoroughly captivating.
O'Rourke aspires to write a romance so epic that it will be remembered in the history books. Other images about the sun and fighting serpents also help solidify the experience for the listener that they have been pulled into a verse from The Iliad .
Further references towards various icons of mythology is particularly ingenious. Heroes like Achilles and Perseus are brought up in connection to his lovers, showing them as beacons of strength for him.

A strong debut from his new EP, O'Rourke spoke about what inspired him for the song, "I'm a sucker for melody and a good story, I always have been. A combination of classical training and being read to before bed. Whatever sonic universe I'm inhabiting or chasing, a sweeping melody and the lyric always takes precedent. That's where I'm at, that's what I'm about.
Jack O'Rourke's new EP is available on July 27.
