Life lessons from Mr Nice at Metropolis.
He may be battling The Big C but Howard Marks was his typically witty, warm and optimistic self at Metropolis today. The former drug smuggler and acclaimed author sat down with old friend Olaf Tyaransen for an expansive conversation and audience Q&A.
While he says his productivity has lessened quite a bit, he hopes "the quality has increased." Talking about the big questions, he said he believes in "life after death", even if his personality doesn't go on.
There was much humour when proceedings were thrown to the floor, with one chancer askng for "advice for an up-and-coming drug smuggler."
Get used to getting busted and don't be a grass, were Marks' wise words.
Speaking about writing his famous Mr Nice memoir, he admitted "I couldn't remember a fucking thing... The only way I could get a book together was through the Freedom of Information act!"
Why do people take drugs?
"Because their lives are miserable... It's so silly not to take drugs."
He also spoke about having no qualms with working with the IRA, even if he is anti-violence. "I thought bringing dope into Ireland could only benefit all involved."
With memories of dealing with the Mafia ("alright to deal with... good food"), admitting to Gay Byrne that he had dope, much chemical analysis and more, it truly was a talk for the ages.
His greatest lesson?
"Not to take myself too seriously."
As one man put it, an inspiration to a generation.
