Metal supergroup score points victory.
In a bid to bypass difficult second album syndrome ‘The Van Hagar Chilli Pepper And Satch Collective’ (Chickenfoot if you prefer) have decided to title their sophomore effort III. That’s the tone set before a note is even played.
‘Alright Alright’ has a loose, louche pop rock beat that sounds like The Kinks going down to funky town with Buddy Holly. Musical cross-referencing is also evident on the rock-nod-and-a-wink track ‘Lighten Up’. Purple-tinged keyboard intro, Aerosmith-style breakdown, Satriani ripping up a cheeky solo that can barely contain its glee and Hagar’s vocals ending with a couple of Coverdale-crooned ‘ooooh babys’. And ‘Up Next’ proves that death ain’t a barrier to having a good time.
However, it ain’t just all about going loco down in Acapulco. ‘Three And A Half Letters’ tackles economic meltdown and blue-collar misery as Satriani twists and distorts his guitar into Houdini-esque contortions of impotent rage.
And just when you thought it was all getting a little too serious, ‘Dubai Blues’ comes along to sheikh your money maker. Steady, seductive percolating bass batons down the hatches as Satriani’s guitar takes off in a series of tornado twists and scorching sand storms.
Not everything works. The overall tone of the album is a little clunky and forced at times, but the general exuberance, good vibrations and carefree smiles just about compensate. Now, who feels like Chicken Tonight?
