The Irish industry organisations believe it will reduce the level of illegal downloading.
The Irish Music Rights Organisation and the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society Ireland have both welcomed the launch of eircom’s new MusicHub service, which offers existing eircom broadband customers unlimited free streaming.
“The launch of a legitimate online music service in the Irish market by a key market player such as eircom is something that we greatly welcome,” says IMRO CEO Victor Finn. “IMRO/MCPSI worked closely with eircom over the last number of months to ensure that an appropriate music licensing scheme was put in place that best protects and remunerates the many songwriters, composers and music publishers that we represent in advance of the service going live. This service gives Irish consumers legal access to in excess of four million tracks and we would hope that this will have a positive effect in reducing the level of online illegal downloads and filesharing, which has had a deep impact on music creators income streams in recent years.”
