Forgot Bono. When the Bishop of Limerick decided to quote some rock lyrics recently, he could have done worse than reference some of the talent in his backyard...
So we hear the new Bishop of Limerick quoted Bono in his first address. Didn’t he know there’s a batch of talent under his nose more in need of a shout out than Mr. Hewson? Had he wandered by his predecessors’ abode he might have come across Senekah recording their album with Cranberry Noel Hogan for instance. Yes indeed, the group chose the former Bishop’s Palace to assemble latest confection Human Relations, which hits the streets on May 17. This follows from 2008’s excellent debut Sweeter Than Bourbon which bore two top 30 singles, ‘Smile’ and ‘Clarity’. Check hotpress.com for live dates…
Meanwhile over in the Out On A Limb camp, Peter Delaney is being added to their star-studded roster. Peter is preparing to unleash his debut album Witch Bottle May 10. The release follows 2007’s debut mini-album and 2010’s live collection.
Delaney has impressive live credentials having shared the stage with The Swell Season, Fionn Regan, A Hawk & A Hacksaw , Phosphorescent and Alasdair Roberts.
No slouch, Peter is also a member of Red Eskimo and runs Wireless Folk, a live acoustic night in Limerick. He makes short films, experimental films and music videos too, making him a real multitasker.
Keeping things southern… Cork’s Exit: Pursued By A Bear have launched a fundit.ie/project/exit-pursued-by-a-bear-album-2 campaign for their second album. To date the band have released two EPs, some singles and a well-received debut long-player. They admit their “working pace is more befitting a tortoise than a bear” but claim your contributions will help change their ways!
Dubliner Conor Deasy (no, not the Thrill!) is creating many waves in his new guise Biggles Flys Again. He may be known to readers for his output with The Gandhis. However, the side-project is causing a stir. BFA peddle a beguiling brand of ‘traditional pop’, which has drawn comparisons with Brian Wilson and Badly Drawn Boy. Debut album Remember Saturday received plaudits and headline and festival dates are in the pipeline.
Some RSAG news next. Jeremy is putting the finishing touches to a new EP due in June, in advance of his next full-length release expected later this year. He has also been busy lending his talents to a bevvy of other projects including a collaboration with Cathy Davey and his work on the new Jerry Fish single – he’s playing with Mr. F on his upcoming summer tour.
In terms of his own live activity, he makes appearances at Vantastival, Body & Soul, and the border-straddling Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival, which takes in Malin, Donegal and the City of Derry from May 16 – 19. You can catch Mr. Hickey at the Trocaire Live event on April 27 in Dublin’s Grand Social….
Another date not to miss if you are more of the folk and roots persuasion is I Draw Slow and Cederic Watson in the Dublin Button Factory on May 8. I Draw Slow have a busy summer ahead with appearances scheduled at the Happy Valley Festival, Kilkenny (June 1); Doolin Folk Festival, Clare (16) and the Westport Festival (30). They head away to the States in July for a batch of dates. Make sure to catch them before they go!
