Fräulein new Pedestal EP will arrive on June 30th via Submarine Cat Records.
Northern Irish/Dutch duo Fräulein have announced details of their forthcoming Pedestal EP with grungy new track 'Brand New'.
Pedestal will arrive on June 30th via Submarine Cat Records, with 'Brand New' following previous lead single 'Pet'. To celebrate the release, fans can pre-order a very limited edition cassette of the Pedestal EP via the band’s Bandcamp from today.
Starting off slow (and Nirvana-like, though I'm sure they're tired of hearing that) - 'Brand New' builds in intensity as Joni Samuels sings of feeling ready to shed her skin and begin anew, shrugging off insecurities but still finding it treacherous. "Ready to be plucked, gentle nourishment / It all pours out as I open...Wrap me up in plastic / My whole body's here, ready to be sold / And it all spills out, dripping down your chin / Feast on me 'til I'm ready again..."
Pedestal is the band’s follow up to their debut EP A Small Taste, which heard the duo throw down the gauntlet and solidify their early sound; cathartic 90s flavoured alt-rock influenced by the likes of The Breeders, PJ Harvey and Big Thief, whilst incorporating cavernous grooves and sharply observational lyrics.
'Pet' kickstarted the band’s year alongside raucous shows supporting Big Joanie and Nova Twins. Cut over three days with producer Ali Chant (Yard Act, Sorry, Soccer Mommy), the new EP doubles down on the themes from their debut, maintaining their infectious, raw live sound but with the added confidence to experiment in the studio, conjuring a more coherent and mature body of work.

“Brand New’ is sort of the culmination of the entirety of the EP, which is why it’s the closing track” explains Joni Samuels. “It’s a song about trying to shed all of the negativity and low thoughts explored in the first half of the EP, trying to start fresh and just express yourself. But with that comes some sacrifices too - it’s a song about putting yourself out there, barefaced and real”.
The duo will hit the road this Wednesday for a UK headline tour, visiting Leeds, Bristol, Southampton and Brighton before capping off at London’s The George Tavern on the 27th April. Hopefully they'll hit Belfast, Dublin and more Irish dates soon...
