St. Patrick’s Festival has added the upcoming Irish Hip Hop Against Homelessness gig, curated by Dublin rapper Nealo, to their official programme.
The showcase gig features sets from Nealo himself as well as artists like the Choice Prize-nominated Jafaris, JyellowL (who is currently on tour with huge 90's hip hop star Nelly), Erica Cody (who supported Mahalia in Ireland and has played for the President) and Celaviedmai - the Galway rapper who is becoming one of the most recognised names in Irish music after features in Vice and The New York Times.
The gig takes place on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, Monday March 16, at The Sugar Club in Dublin and all proceeds will go to Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH).
Nealo, who has just returned from performing at Other Voices and who regularly sells out his own gigs, says: “Putting on this gig is a reaction to the unacceptable amount of homeless people in Ireland. The number of people accessing emergency accommodation increased in January, bringing the number to over 10,000.
It’s horrible to walk past people on the street and feel powerless to help them - and it’s getting worse. I just wanted to do something to help and I feel like everyone else involved did too. That’s why it was so easy to put the artists together for it - every single person that I asked said yes.”
