The man behind Lenny Abrahamson’s extraordinary film, up for Best Film at this year's Oscars, worries that the financial backing for talent in this country is inadequate
While Saoirse Ronan, Lenny Abrahamson and even Emma Donoghue are getting attention ahead of the night where the red carpet turns green at the Oscars, Hot Press caught up with the man behind the success of Room - Element Pictures founder Ed Guiney.
The company, started in 2001, produced the Oscar nominated film, and is also behind TV3’s award-winning soap-opera Red Rock.
And while he tells Olaf Tyaransen that he's looking forward to the big night in Hollywood, the future may not look so bright.
“The film board has, relative to other countries, very little money," he says. "I think in order to sustain the undoubted momentum that is there that they have to invest in, primarily, talent.
"To find writers and directors and actors who are unique, special, gifted, and have something to say. That’s the really hard thing.”
The Dubliner also talks about the Oscars, his early days in the industry and his ambitions for the future.
