A talented producer in addition to his songwriting, Smith also has a remix project under the name YURN.
Gearing up for the release of his debut album (...)and you chose not to laugh in late May, J Smith (aka James Smith, former Gypsies on the Autobahn frontman) has shared a deeply personal, intimate video for his latest single, 'Blood Orange'.
The song itself is about a couple trying to reignite passions, so Smith and his production team (Oliver Kelly, Alex Lynch) spliced together footage of Smith and his wife, Ffion, their wedding day, and stock footage to create a delicate, timeless video.
“The initial concept of the video was to show two bodies embracing and covered in paint, as the video runs in reverse, slowly lifting the paint and revealing the pair," Smith explains. "Although I had convinced my pregnant wife to partake, I couldn’t find paint which wouldn’t either harm my unborn child or render us hairless.”
So, they adapted. But again, there were complications. “A sudden emergency halted filming and we’d only had three hours to shoot everything." Smith, Kelly and Lynch collaborate frequently, so rather than panic, Smith had them stitch together home movies and some stock footage alongside whatever they shot in the three hours.
