CW: This story discusses alleged abuse and acts of self-harm.
Beach Slang and Quiet Slang frontman James Alex has been hospitalised, according to a statement released by his family on January 11th. It says that Alex "is in an inpatient facility after attempting to take his life". They added that Alex is "getting the help he needs", and that "Beach Slang is over" and that Alex does not have plans to return to music.
The statement begins with a response to allegations of emotional abuse perpetrated by Alex from Beach Slang's former manager Charlie Lowe, who said on Twitter that Alex's "constant" abuse has resulted in her complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) diagnosis. “Yes he had moments of compulsiveness, emotional instability, and chaotic relationships," the family wrote, "but none of his actions were intentional or meant to hurt or harm anyone.”
Alex’s family also revealed that the musician has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder, noting that “while mental illness does not excuse anyone to cause others emotional duress, it should at least be acknowledged that it may cause one to unknowingly hurt others and themselves with their words and actions.”

In response to that statement, Lowe tweeted out “past trauma isn’t a blank check to perpetuate more trauma", and said that the family's words were "effectively silencing [her] as the victim and putting the spotlight right back on James for sympathy".
