Monaghan composer Jamie Duffy on ‘For The Moon’, touring ambitions, and being inspired by Lana Del Rey and The Dubliners...
When did your passion for composing start?
Since I learned to play piano, it’s something I’ve toyed with. I didn’t see it in a serious light until my final year of university, when I was 21 or so. I had a bit of a moment online, and people told me they liked my compositions. A spark went off in my head, and I thought, this is something that I could do full time. And then I released my debut track, ‘Solas’.
What was it like composing ‘For The Moon’?
A lot of my writing takes place really late at night and in the wee hours of the morning. It was June last year, about 2am, and there was a really bright moon in the sky. I’m from a very rural part of the country, in Co. Monaghan. It’s a privilege to go out on a summer’s night when it’s so quiet – most of the time you can look up and the sky will be clear.

It does wonders for anybody who’s writing any kind of art, music, or composing. It’s where I feel most happy and at peace. I was home, just me and the piano. I messed around with some ideas and created the song. It’s a very sensitive, quiet piece of music.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Enya is definitely up there – I’m completely obsessed with her music. I love older Irish artists too, the likes of The Dubliners. I’m also a massive sucker for pop music. I adore Lana Del Rey, she really created an awakening inside me when I was 13. I tend not to check out stuff in my genre – listening to people under the same umbrella stresses me out sometimes.
Any projects on the horizon?
I’m about to embark on another Irish tour, and I’m also starting to tour Europe. It’s all a learning curve and I’m loving it. An album is coming in the near future, and there are also some projects around film – my first dabbling in that world, which is very exciting....
