John Spillane has shared a special new track, 'Palestine Sunbird' – written, as he explained in a social media post, "in response to the unfolding genocide in Gaza."
"Like so many others I've been shocked to the core by the slaughter of innocent men women and children and the relentless violence against the Palestinian people since the foundation of the state of Israel," the acclaimed Cork singer-songwriter reflected. "The Palestine Sunbird was declared the national bird of Palestine in 2015 after the Israeli occupation authorities tried to change it's name in their efforts to erase Palestinian identity."
John has been outspoken on the issue before – playing at several events in solidarity with, and in aid of, the people of Palestine, including the recent From Cork To Palestine gig in An Spailpín Fánach. He's also a supporter of Gaeil ar son Gaza's 'Solas do Phaistí Gaza' campaign.
With a solo recording career that kicked off in 1997, with The Wells of the World, John Spillane has built up a reputation as one of the country's most lauded singer-songwriters. His latest release was the 2022 live album In Another Light, recorded at the Cork Opera House.
