Joni Mitchell at Newport is due to drop July 28th, and is available to preorder now.
On Sunday, July 24th, last year, Joni Mitchell took to the Newport Folk Festival’s stage for a surprise concert. Today, the 79-year-old delivered the news to fans, that her surprise performance will be captured on the new live album entitled Joni Mitchell at Newport, which is due to drop July 28th.
With liner notes written by Cameron Crowe, the new album will be released via Rhino Entertainment Records.
“Mitchell emerged from the side of the stage, swaying smoothly, in fine summer-style with beret and sunglasses. Her good-natured mood instantly set the tone,” Crowe details in the notes.
“This performance would be an intimate gathering of friends, not unlike the Joni Jams she’d been hosting in her own living room over the last few years of recovery. Smiling broadly, Mitchell made her surprise appearance, taking her on-stage seat alongside [Brandi] Carlile,” he continues.
“Within minutes, the news had rocketed around the globe. Mitchell was back, sparkling with enthusiasm, delivering a tender and passionate set of 13 songs, ending with a joyful sing-along of ‘The Circle Game.’”

Newport’s ‘Joni Jam’ marked the singer’s first full show since 2000, and her first concert following a life-threatening brain aneurysm she suffered in 2015. Mitchell is next due to perform at Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington, with Brandi Carlile as part of another ‘Joni Jam’ on June 10th.
