Junior Boys announce new album The Gore
They have also announced a series of special events, including a screening of Michael Snow's experimental film Wavelength, followed by a full playback of The Gore and a Q&A with Jeremy Greenspan.
Canadian electro-pop duo Junior Boys have announced a new album, The Gore, out February 12, 2027 via City Slang.
Along with the news comes the release of 'Underneath The Moon', the lead single on the record. It is accompanied by a video directed by John Smith.
Inspired by lead vocalist Jeremy Greenspan's fascination with experimental film, horror and science fiction, many of the tracks draw on classic horror and genre cinema.
"This song is deeply inspired by the 2022 horror film Skinamarink," said Greenspan of 'Underneath The Moon'. "I used old tape loop techniques using an old tascam tape machine to achieve a number of effects in the film, to work a sort of homage to the ephemeral quality of analog recording tech."
Junior Boys have also announced a series of special events, including a screening of Michael Snow's experimental film Wavelength, followed by a full playback of The Gore, accompanied by a series of original visualisers, and a Q&A session with Greenspan. This will take place in New York City, Seattle and Toronto early next year.
The Gore is their seventh album, following on from 2022's Waiting Game. Greenspan has described these two records as a matched pair, "a polarised articulation of the same thing, something about Silence, Serenity, Terror and Time, both circular and unending."
The new album took roughly two years to make and closes on the opening chords of Waiting Game, so the pair could be looped together.
"I have tried very hard to buck the maximalist trends of modern production and emphasize as full a spectrum of dynamics as I can," Greenspan said. "Loudness is not a bad word - there are many exciting things to be done musically with intensity and noise - but loudness is often a wall, a force that separates instead of invites."
Formed in 1999, Junior Boys consist of Greenspan and Matt Didemus. They released their debut EP Birthday/Last Exit in 2003 and later embarked on a number of tours with electronic music project Caribou.
Their second studio album, So This Is Goodbye, dropped in 2006 and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize.
Four of their albums have reached the Top Ten on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, including 2009's Begone Dull Care at No. 6, 2016's Big Black Coat at No. 7, 2011's It's All True at No. 8 and So This Is Goodbye at No. 10.
