Following the release of 'No Snitch' last month – and news of the arrival of his new album, The Great Irish Famine, on September 2 – Junior Brother is back with 'This Is My Body', the new single from his highly anticipated second LP. The track arrives alongside a brilliantly bizarre accompanying music video, directed by Ellius Grace.
“We relax thusly into the anxiety of self-image, and the sheer heights of absurdity we humans go to denigrate ourselves, for being utterly human," the Co. Kerry singer-songwriter, also known as Ronan Kealy, says of the new single. "If we’re lucky, we find our soulmate, who can heighten this self-loathing in the loathing self. But a soul mate mates with soul, and that can only grow stronger as body bobs and weaves through a nourished life.”
The surreal video for 'This Is My Body' stars Irish actors Bryan Quinn – who also made a memorable appearance in The Rubberbandits' video for 'Dads Best Friend' – and Paula McGlinchey.
The Great Irish Famine follows 2019's lauded Pull The Right Rope, which was nominated for the Choice Music Prize for Album of the Year, and helped Junior Brother secure the honour of The Irish Times' 'Best Irish Act of 2019'. He also scored two nominations at the 2019 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, for Best Folk Album and Best Emerging Folk Act.
With influences that span both genres and centuries, and a devoted following on these shores and beyond, the singer-songwriter has garnered major praise from the likes of Blindboy and Cillian Murphy – the latter playing him several times on his BBC Radio 6 Music show. His television performances, meanwhile, include appearances on RTÉ’s The Tommy Tiernan Show, and Other Voices. He has also collaborated with CMAT – with the pair joining forces on the 2020 track 'Uncomfortable Christmas'.
