Just A Tragedy/Attention To Detail
Unless some stunning bit of earth-shattering electro-funk rears its head between now and Christmas (I’m looking at you, Sinéad O’Connor), I’m fairly confident that Patrick Kelleher’s Golden Syrup and Squarehead’s Yeah Nothing will occupy the top two spots on my Irish albums of 2011 list. That said, a mutual association with happy-go-lucky Dublin label Popical Island and their rubbing shoulders on my iTunes ‘Most Played’ is where the comparisons end. This joint 7” comes as a wonderful surprise given their contrasting vibes, especially when you learn that Kelleher’s ‘Just A Tragedy’ and Roy Duffy’s ‘Attention To Detail’ are performed by the two acts working together in harmonious, lo-fi tandem. Spookier than Squarehead’s delectable surf rock, but dreamier than Kelleher’s madcap disco-rave, this seamless hybrid of two wildly divergent sounds must have been impossible to make. The good news is, it’s incredibly easy to enjoy. Keep an eye on Popical Island's page for details of an upcoming 'listening party' to celebrate the tracks' imminent release.
