star-crossed, described as a "modern tragedy told in three acts," is out next month.
After teasing lyrics from new material earlier this week, Kacey Musgraves has officially announced that her new album, star-crossed, is out on September 10. As well as releasing the project's title track, she revealed that the album will be accompanied by a film – releasing a trailer to coincide with the news.
The trailer for the 50-minute film, directed by Bardia Zeinali, features appearances from Eugene Levy, Princess Nokia, Victoria Pedretti, comedian Megan Stalter, RuPaul's Drag Race season 13 winner Symone, and more.
Described by Musgraves as "a modern tragedy told in three acts," star-crossed will arrive over three years after the release of her acclaimed Golden Hour – which won Album of the Year at the 2019 GrammyAwards, alongside Best Country Album, Best Country Song ('Space Cowboy') and Best Country Solo Performance ('Butterflies').
The new album's opening track, 'star-crossed', addresses Musgraves' divorce from singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly last year.
"At the beginning of this year I was like, 'I want the chance to transform my trauma into something else and I want to give myself that opportunity, even if it’s painful,'" Musgraves told Apple Music. "But I’m excited to share star-crossed just because people know me to be a songwriter that writes about what I’m going through. And I think it would have been extremely awkward if I just acted like this last chapter didn’t happen for me. So I think you saw my highlight reel with Golden Hour. And this is the other side of that. And, I mean, there are beautiful parts of that, too."
