The artist has not issued a statement since the announcement.
Cornell University has cancelled an upcoming Kehlani concert due to the artist’s pro-Palestinian messaging.
Kehlani was initially expected to perform at the university’s annual Slope Day event on May 7. Cornell president Michael I. Kotlikoff wrote a letter to the student body on Wednesday, stating that students reached out “angry, hurt, and confused that Slope Day would feature a performer who has espoused antisemitic, anti-Israel sentiments in performances, videos, and on social media.” A new lineup will be announced soon.
“While any artist has the right in our country to express hateful views, Slope Day is about uniting our community, not dividing it,” wrote Kotlikoff.
Kehlani has been outspoken for her support of Palestine, appearing in front of Palestinian flags in the music video for her 2024 song ‘Next 2 U.” The video ended with the words, “long live the intifada.” She also shared a message saying she tried “honoring the names of thousands of deceased children” but that the list was too long, so she linked an article from Al Jazeera instead.

In an Instagram post announcing the song, the singer referenced US activist Toni Cade Bambara’s quote, “the role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible.”
“As an artist, i was nervous [to release ‘Next 2 U’],” she wrote. “Terrified… paired with the crippling wonder of what music is appropriate to drop during the most historical tragedies of our generation.”
“My decision will be celebrated by some and criticised by others,” wrote Kotlikoff. “I believe it is the right thing to do and the decision I must make to ensure community and safety at this high-profile event.”
