Kid CuDi: Indicud
Respectable third outing from alt-rapper...
Kid Cudi’s third album is a curious thing. There are lots of repetitive, slow-tempo beats, thoughtful rapping and lofty choruses. But a crack-team of collaborators do a very good job of ensuring that there is little hint of monotony.
We are treated, for example, to a brilliant star-turn from the Haim sisters on the heartfelt ‘Red Eye’. Kendrick Lamar leaves his distinctive imprint on the rapid fire ‘Solo Dolo Part II’. And elsewhere things go in a rock direction with Father John Misty stepping in to provide the trippy riff and the swirling vocals on ‘Young Lady’. Michael Bolton (yes!) is the strangest inclusion, joining King Chip on the nine-minute soft-rock opus ‘Afterwards (Bring Yo Friends)’.
Maybe that song should have been left among the outtakes. Otherwise, there are enough positive moments to make Indicud worthwhile.
Key Track: Young Lady
