To claim Archie Marshall is difficult to pin down is a bit like saying Limerick had a bad day out against Clare last month. Educated at Adele/Amy Winehouse alma mater the BRIT school, the 19-year old is a dead ringer for the buck-toothed, red haired mascot from Mad magazine and plies tunes that refuse to inhabit recognisable genres.
On his debut LP as King Krule, he variously dabbles in wistful ska (‘Borderline’) and atonal urban balladry (Cementality’). At moments, the lo-fi production, coupled with Marshall’s ‘interesting’ singing voice, lends proceedings the air of an art-house prank (‘The Krockadile’ is so guttural you wonder if it’s on purpose). Over 14 tracks, however, KK’s weird musical visions start to cast a spell, even if you find his diamond-drill weirdness initially disorientating.
