Norway's Kings Of Convenience explain their quiet revolution to EAMON SWEENEY
Contrary to the nu-metal connotations of their name, Kings of Convenience speak through tender whispers rather than bombastic power chords. Quiet Is The New Loud is their catchphrase, debut album title and sonic manifesto. After their strong debut on the European festival circuit last summer, an international bidding war was waged as labels from all over the world sought to sign, seal and deliver the Kings. They earned the kudos, respect and love of The Divine Comedy and Mogwai after playing only a handful of shows, and now they're itching to bring their warm songs of love and precious memories to the masses.
The Kings of Convenience story begins in Bergen, Norway, when in a true twee indie stylee Erlend and Eirik met on a Geography Field Trip.
*We've been writing music together for eight or nine years,* adds the Erlend Oye half of the duo. *We released a number of EPs and singles before signing to Source and then put out the Live In A Room EP.*
Erlend and Eirik chose to promote said EP by playing a selection of special shows in cinemas, which they are also opting to do for this album.
Erland: *We were trying to come with some kind of bold mission statement for the album, so Quiet Is The New Loud fitted perfectly! Its got a funny reaction from people, as they think we're going to be a noisy band just having a play on words.*
Indeed I half expected some nu-noise fest à la Queens of The Stone Age. Erlend laughs out loud and begins describing the view of the mountains from his nearest window. Big hair and bottles of Jack Daniels this ain't.
The Kings of Convenience will perform their first ever Irish show alongside the sublime Low at the Olympia, who have just released Things We Lost in The Fire - easily the finest record of the year to date in my book.
*We can't wait to play with Low, since we are huge fans. We've never played in Ireland before, but I went to Dublin to see Alfie and I had one of the best times of my life, so yes, I am very excited!*
Get those earplugs out because The Kings will blow you away in hushed whispers and gentle guitar strokes. See ya down the front.
