Featured artists on the upcoming album include Lankum's Radie Peat, London hip-hop artist Jelani Blackman, and Fontaines D.C.'s Grian Chatten
Following the release of 'Better Way To Live' back in November, KNEECAP have returned with 'Sick In The Head' – a brand new single from their upcoming debut album, which they've unveiled further details about today.
The LP, Fine Art , will be released on June 14, via independent London-based label Heavenly Recordings, who the West Belfast group signed to in September.
Produced by Toddla T, the album, according to its official description, "seamlessly merges Irish with English and satire with socially conscious lyrics", and "is fiercely intelligent, consistently hilarious and genuinely thought provoking."
"When working on the album we had periods of great productivity but also periods with a total lack of anything creatively," KNEECAP – Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí – comment. "Towards the end of recording we hit a proper wall and this is the result. Our mental health was being tested and we said f*ck it it we’re doomed to mental torture we want to have some money to get through it. We’ve had enough of it while being broke round Belfast."
Mo Chara has also spoken about English DJ and producer Toddla T's impact on the album.

“When we got into the studio with Toddla T, we scrapped every song we had and started from complete scratch," he explains. "T’s idea was to tell the story of Kneecap. So the record was conceived as the listener stepping into Kneecap’s world. That’s where the idea came to set whole thing in a pub. You walk into a pub at the start, there’s someone offering you a drink, there’s a singsong… really, it’s us taking you by the hand and leading you into our world.”
It was reported earlier this month that KNEECAP are taking legal action over a decision by the UK Government to block their funding through the Music Export Growth Scheme – despite the group's application being "independently approved and signed off by [the] selection board."
It follows a hugely successful period for KNEECAP, following the world premiere of Rich Peppiatt's film starring and inspired by the trio, at the Sundance Film Festival. KNEECAP, which also features Michael Fassbender, won the highly coveted Audience Award in the festival's NEXT section.
'Sick In The Head' arrives alongside a music video, directed by Peadar Ó Goill.
"We're in the centre of a sweaty mosh pit mid-gig in a dark warehouse room," the group say of the video. "This pit represents emotional state, from f*cked up and chaotic to moments of clarity and calmness. The warehouse offers escape – from the mundane... for the marginalised."
