It would be easy to lambast Lil’ Chris and point out that this record falls short. After all, that’s what’s expected, isn’t it?
It would be easy to lambast Lil’ Chris and point out that this record falls short. After all, that’s what’s expected, isn’t it? However, reality is a contrary thing and, truth be told, the Lil’ one’s debut stands on a par with similarly fun-filled and fancy-free pop-rock.
That this record is not an ear-insulting travesty can in large part be attributed to the fine song-writing team assembled to bolster the boy’s chances. Melody provides the backbone of this record; the choruses are hook-filled traps ready to ensnare the unwary listener. The single ‘Checkin’ It Out’ is placed to the fore here, its relatively uncomplicated rawk providing for a somewhat misleading entrée. Elsewhere, there is a little more guile, genres being cross-matched to interesting effect. A touch of New Romantic bombast infiltrates ‘I Never Noticed’, glam rock peps up ‘Is She Ready?’ and synthetic splutter adds an electro-rocker feel to ‘She Dances On The Stage’.
But hey, Lil’ Chris is down with the kids and, in the main, it’s the sound of emo that prevails. Musically commendable, the stories relayed are the standard grist to the teenage mill: love and rebellion. Lyrically then, there isn’t much to holler about, though Lil’ Chris sure tries. His voice fluctuates alarmingly; various affectations are adopted, from British punk snarl to American rock bawl and everything in-between. But, it’s a minor gripe, after all there’s plenty of time for Lil’ Chris to find his place and his own voice. The kid’s alright.
