Jim James of My Morning Jacket has released a new song, titled "Here In Spirit," in honor of the victims of this summer's tragic shooting at Orlando's Pulse nightclub, and in support of those who stand with the victims of the event. James was inspired to write the song the day after the shooting, while he was attending a rally in Los Angeles. The song is a call to stand together in the face of tragedy and injustice. James also wrote a statement about the song, saying:"I was feeling so utterly gutted that things like this keep happening. It’s a song about speaking out and trying to be there for people in spirit even if you can’t be at every rally and battle. We have such a duty to speak out for equality and for each other. I will always lend my voice to whatever the civil rights issue is of the day, to whomever needs the most help and love."
James has continued to write music with a social and political impact, as he recorded the new song "Same Old Lie" as part of the "30 days, 30 songs" project dedicated to keep Donald Trump out of the White House. More about the project can be found in Caitlyn Stewart's piece posted on the Hot Press website earlier today. "Here In Spirit" will be on James's new album Eternally Even, out November 4.
