Following a stunning set on the Hot Press Lockdown Sessions' Y&E Series, Smoothboi Ezra is back with a brand new single, 'My Own Person' – the first track from an upcoming collection of new songs, set to be released in the coming months.
"I wrote this song when I was 16," Ezra says of 'My Own Person', which they recorded in their bedroom. "I had one or two outfits I would interchange and I wore the same grubby pair of shoes every day. They were replicas of a previous grubby pair I wore when I was 14 and 15. The song is about not being happy but not being able to do anything about it.
“When I finish a song I let go of it, it’s not mine anymore and I forget it," they add. "A lot of the time I’ll have to teach myself the song again before a live show."
With Spotify streams in their millions, Smoothboi Ezra has emerged as one of the country's most compelling new artists – crafting a unique, label-defying sound, and earning comparisons to the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Elliott Smith and Mitski. Earlier this year, the Co. Wicklow singer-songwriter was tipped as one of the Hot Press 'Hot for 2020' Irish acts – and with a collection of new songs on the way, you can expect their skyrocketing trajectory to continue in 2021.
