Rankin's Wood Stage opened with the full force of 'The Tolü Makay Experience' on Sunday afternoon.
As soon as Tolü Makay kicks off her set on the Rankins Wood stage, the crowds are drawn in as if by a magnet. The recent Hot Press cover star brought the full 'Tolü Makay Experience' to Electric Picnic early on Sunday afternoon, with a magical and energetic performance that was truly a highlight of the last day of the festival.
It's always worth seeing Makay perform just to see what she's wearing, and Sunday's costume did not disappoint. She shimmied and danced around the stage in a yellow mini skirt, crop top and backless jacket three piece, heavily beaded and embellished with huge pointed shoulders, topped with a small yet elaborate headpiece. Her band and back up singers are all clad in black, with sashes, armbands, belts, headbands and collars all to match.
Diving straight into the set with 'Wild Thang', this set was a long time dream come true for the Nigerian-born singer songwriter. "The last time I performed at Electric Picnic was as someone else's back up singer," she tells us, and this set is the fulfilment of a promise she made to herself that day that she would be back performing as her own woman.

As performers go, she is constantly engaging with us, the crowd, and most songs are preluded by a little bit of its history 'Ocean' is about a time she lost her phone in the sea: "It swam away so I had to write a song about it and make it a metaphor," she jokes. 'Earth' apparently is a favourite of Tommy Tiernans. "I played it for him and he liked it so it must be good! She also treats us to a new unreleased song, 'High Note', along with the absolute bops that are 'Reflection' and 'Behavin Like A Lil B**', with an extended dancier outro which gets the crowd moving and dancing even more.
Makay is unparalleled in her magnetic stage presence, and her band and back up singers fill out the stage with a gloriously fun energy. Bringing out 'You Are Enough' for the big finish to a too-short set, they take their bows among wild and adoring cheers. The next time Electric Picnic invite Tolü Makay and co. along, this writer certainly hopes they receive only what they are due: top billing on the Main Stage.
