Steeped in an authentically 70s feeling atmosphere, American singer-songwriter Claire Cottrill, a.k.a. Clairo, took to the stage of 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin to commence the European tour for her self-released and exquisite album Charm.
With several fans holding signs welcoming the singer, Clairo walked elegantly on stage to adoring screams, before sitting on the carpeted conversation pit accompanied by her band, where they sat chatting and laughing, setting the intimate and nostalgic scene from the very beginning. The artist made her delight at being back in Ireland clear, sharing with the audience that she often speaks with her band about Dublin fans.

When the sombre and introspective opening notes of ‘Nomad’, the first track from Charm, started to play, it became immediately apparent that the audience was in for an evening of masterful musicianship and flawless vocals, as each subsequent track that was performed sounded identical to that of its recorded counterpart. With Charm being recorded live entirely on analogue tape, its 70s jazz-style melodies came wholly to life on stage.
Clairo maintained a wonderful balance of singing soulfully in a composed manner while also leaning into the whimsy of some of her tracks, as the jaunty bassline walked us through ‘Second Nature’.

Returning to her first album Immunity, the band launched into ‘Softly’, while Clairo strutted coolly around the stage, inviting the crowd to sing along.

The album’s underlying themes of intimacy and desire floated through the air with the bewitching piano melody and masterful drum fills on ‘Terrapin’. Another musical highlight was the beautiful flute-playing on ‘Add Up My Love’.
A classic from Immunity, Clairo launched into ‘Bags’, following chants of “Olé Olé Olé” from the crowd. Playing guitar and singing with velvety smooth vocals, she beckoned the audience to chant along, “Know you’d make fun of me”.

The crowd burst into dance as the playfully sultry ‘Sexy To Someone’ began. While the groovy upbeat melody bounced off the walls of the venue, Clairo took the time to introduce her band.
Next up was ‘Juna’, which has become the standout track from Charm. Featuring incredible prowess, the band fantastically conveyed the tune’s mischievous and alluring tone, with the crowd utterly transfixed. As Clairo performed the mouth trumpet towards the end of the track, it merged with a real trumpet, creating a harmonious transition that is both innovative and wonderfully individual.

Clairo has previously commented that she was inspired by Blossom Dearie, and how on the back of one of her records, it says “Blossom Dearie sings like she’s sitting in your lap”. She later explained how she wanted to convey her vocal in the same way, one that’s sweet and simple, saying “I want them to feel like I’m in their lap telling them things in their ear”, and this closeness translated magnificently to the stage, as each audience member was in the palm of her hand.
With the stage darkly lit for the majority of the performance, this further emphasised the intimacy and affinity present within Charm and within the walls of 3Olympia. Having leaned deep into the album’s themes of desire and the intoxicating feeling of being enchanted by another, I left feeling utterly charmed.
