The Irish singer-songwriter extraordinaire performed an exceptional set, filled with tracks from her Number 1 debut album If My Wife New I'd Be Dead.
Bubblegum country-pop superstar CMAT landed on the Rankins Wood Stage at Electric Picnic for the final day of the festival, after a summer of incredible international shows.
The tent was heaving far before the Irish musician opened her show, clearly deserving of a larger stage - somewhere like the Electric Arena. The mixed-age crowd erupted as CMAT entered the stage, donned in her signature country getup - green and white pleated skirt, fringed shirt, and cowboy boots, alongside green sequinned shorts and tie. CMAT, full name Ciara Marie-Alice Thompson, knows how to command an audience more than any act I've seen before.
Opening with 'Nashville', the singer encountered a few technical difficulties. "It wouldn't be me if something didn't go wrong," she giggled, "I swear it isn't my first time." Moving into 'Lonely', the musician riled up the crowd, filled with giddy fans appropriately dressed in cowboy hats.
"Does anyone here like bangers?" CMAT asked, continuing: "Cause if you do I have good news for you." Launching into 'I Don't Really Care for You', the charismatic Meath-born singer took a dramatic-as-ever moment to slow down the bridge of this track, followed by stripping off her cape in preparation for a dance number with keys player Colm Conlon aka Púca. The crowd went wild for this fantastic number, with the self-proclaimed global pop star schooling the festival on how to entertain an audience.
'Peter Bogdanovich' was next up, with Thompson sliding onto the stage floor for a theatrical moment in the production, as the side-stage screens closed in on the dazzling green sequins adorning the singer's shorts. A little boogy with her keys player ended the much-loved track.

Chatting to the crowd, the singer explains her next track, saying: "They say there's no such thing as a perfect song and they're wrong - because it's the Sunday of the first Electric Picnic back and this song is about being very tired. It's called '2 Wrecked 2 Care'." The crowd sang along while counting down the hours with CMAT's incredible lyrics: "Four hours sleep, I'm grateful/Three hours sleep, I'm skipping things," and so on.
Thompson then ran off the stage for what the audience presumed was a costume change - but boy were we wrong. The singer returned to the stage carried by drag queens Lavender, Maura Darragh, and Viola Gayvis. With the queens holding her legs and body horizontally, CMAT raised her head for the opening line of 'No More Virgos'. Joined for a dance number by the three drag queens, the crowd screamed along with Ciara.
'Every Bottle (Is My Boyfriend)' followed with drummer Gabrielle King serving serious stank face while Thompson ran around every inch of the stage.
"Ye have somewhat served," the singer complimented the crowd, "but this song is our last." With clear disappointment from the crowd at her allotted stage time coming to an end, Thompson welcomed her queens back on stage, messing with her fans, she joked: "You can find them on the corner."
"The meaning of life is to have fun and make friends," the singer divulged before asking her audience to link arms and line dance for her final track, 'I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!" Thompson was met with deafening applause. The musician stood back and let the crowd sing the chorus of the track before demanding one last round with the audience.
As the set came to a close, it was undeniable that CMAT was the highlight of Electric Picnic for a lot of the Rankins Wood audience. The vocals, entertainment, and overall showmanship was prodigious.
CMAT will be back on Irish shores for a slew of shows across the country this winter - with more information here.
