Due to phenomenal demand, Loyle Carner has announced a third and final Vicar Street show in Dublin, scheduled for February 19th, 2023.
With his new album hugo, the Londoner confronts both the deeply personal and the highly political. Cinematic in scale and scope, hugo is both a rallying war cry for a generation forged in fire and a study of the personal internal conflict that drives the rest of the album - as a mixed-race Black man, as an artist, as a father, and as a son.
After releasing the powerful video for his first single in two years ('Hate'), Carner recently teamed up with John Agard on new track 'Georgetown'. His latest single comes in the form of 'Nobody Knows (Ladas Road)'.
"‘nobody knows’ is a song about fatherhood, forgiveness and the gaps inbetween," Carner explained. "the space between two absolutes. everybody knows what it feels like to be othered, these are the words i wrote, when i felt that way…
The stunning Uncanny-directed video expands on these themes, with Loyle remaining front and centre of the creative process.

“We aimed to push even more focus and attention towards the powerful words by stripping back any distractions, not even allowing for cuts," Uncanny said of the video. "Through this, we were able to give the focus to Loyle and allow space for his performance solely to captivate the viewers attention."
"These themes felt perfectly encapsulated by shooting with one of only three infrared cameras in the world," the director added.
"The way that infrared renders skin through the 65 is just incredible, we kept referring to it as this glassy, almost porcelain look. The way that the landscape is also rendered is surreal, making everything look almost alien, heightening the sense of not quite belonging. The sheer size of the 65 sensor also really helped us to create something that looked unique and really special, with the incredibly shallow depth rendering Loyle and the set as an almost dream world, somewhat akin to a dolls house.”
Carner's last drop before 'Nobody Knows (Ladas Road)', 'Hate' and 'Georgetown' was in late 2020 with single 'Yesterday'. Prior to this, the rapper released his sophomore studio album Not Waving, But Drowning in April 2019.
"Not Waving, But Drowning boasts a range of strong guest appearances – including Tom Misch, Rebel Kleff and Kiko Bun – though none of them overpower Carner, who crafts a compelling coming-of-age narrative over the course of the record," Hot Press' Ellie MacClean wrote in her review at the time.
The musician discussed the meaning behind his latest track, saying the track is "one of the few songs made from a hateful place. I was angry at the world, frightened and overwhelmed. It’s unfiltered. Really just a stream of consciousness that builds to an understanding that hate is rooted in fear."
