Fear for the well-being of LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. is on the rise as Donald Trump begins his second term in the Oval Office
American singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus has said that she will be donating $10,000 (€9,600) towards trans people's surgeries.
"If trans people wanna comment surgery gofundmes, I’m gonna give away 10k in $500 increments until it’s gone, & if other people wanna scroll through and make donations, please do," she wrote on X. "The government will never be the source of our validation or protection, we have to do it ourselves."
Dacus - a renowned solo act and one third of supergroup boygenius - made the announcement after newly-inaugurated U.S President Donald Trump signed an executive order designating two genders only.
"As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female," Trump said during his address on Monday.
The order means that documents such as passports can reflect only two sexes. Furthermore, taxpayer funds will be prevented from being used for gender-affirming healthcare, while prisons will be designated by sex assigned at birth, meaning that trans women could be held in male prisons (and vice-versa).

Trump has also promised to roll back transgender protections and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) programmes as part of his wider crusade against "woke culture," leaving many Queer people and members of other marginalised communities concerned for their rights.
