Luscious Jackson - Magic Hour
DECENT COMEBACK FROM ALT-ROCK HEROINES
Former Beastie Boys drummer (by the way, does that really make her a Beastie girl?) Kate Schellenbach and her funky band of soul sisters were ‘90s hipster cool personified.
After the group disbanded in 2000, Schellenbach moved into television production and did a stint working for The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The slinkiest and hippest drummer in alt-rock is now back where she belongs, however, creating more delicious laidback grooves alongside Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser. The only downer is that keyboardist Vivian Trimble has decided to sit out this crowd-funded reunion record.
You couldn’t claim that this is a typical seasonal offering. Luscious Jackson’s light and pleasant soufflé of pop and hip hop would perhaps sound timlier in spring or summer, as opposed to early winter when the clocks going back plunges us all into darkness. But whatever time of the year is in it, Luscious Jackson are most definitely a whole lot of fun. Who else could pen a reggae-infused ditty entitled ‘#1 Bum’ about how good someone’s rear end is?
The archetypal Grand Royal band back in the day, Luscious Jackson haven’t dramatically rewritten the script from their heyday. Magic Hour isn’t their finest outing either. But there’s enough quality to serve as a timely reminder of their indelible contribution to coolness.
Key Track: '#1 Bum’
