Madonna
This isn't some overblown sub-Goth melodramatic pantomine, despite the preposterous ten word name.
This isn't some overblown sub-Goth melodramatic pantomine, despite the preposterous ten word name. Neither is Madonna some Atari Teenage Riot-style celebrity myth asassination, but a welcome and unexpected return to full throttle, no holds barred American alt-rock that has been brewing in Austin, Texas.
Cuts like 'Totally Naturally' and 'Blight Takes All' are scorching mini-epics that demand you crank up the volume. 'Clair de Lune' and the eerie piano-led beauty of 'The Day The Earth Turned Blue' may ease the pace, but the tension explodes again in 'A Perfect Teenhood'. The end result is still a good few notches away from the calibre of the band's influences, and if Madonna had come out in 1991, it is questionable whether anyone would have given a toss.
Still, here's the pure voice of underground America. For that alone AYWKUBTTOD deserve your attention. One word names are getting boring anyway.
