The four-track rap debut project is a personal narrative for Malik, and has attracted the attention of many new listeners.
Malik, aka the Melanated Militant, treated listeners to a debut EP last week, The Art of War.
The album serves to set up Malik's larger upcoming project, Melanated One, and provided a glimpse into his creative vision and talent.
Ireland’s drill scene has been blowing up since 2018, with homegrown rappers and producers putting their own spin on the world-conquering sound. With help from producer Liam Harris, Malik creates some energetic new genre-bending Latin and Irish drill sounds that depict his personal experiences of his migration story, shedding light on a narrative often overlooked in Ireland.
As an artist of Nigerian origin raised in Ireland, Malik embraces an authentic portrayal of the world and his surroundings. He dedicates time to delve into the intricate details of the communities and individuals who have influenced his journey.
The album starts strong with the first song, 'Oui War'. Malik explains that "when your options ain't options, just tough", a relatable line examining how tough the lack of choices can be for many facing difficulties in Ireland.

Malik's songs stay consistently clean throughout the EP, with 'Cease Fire' and 'Tory Lanez' continuing the solid performance by the rapper. Each provides a relentless, conversational flow, and brazen rhymes aimed at questioning social issues and complexities.
The EP slows for the final song 'Nubian Princess', where Malik raps over a steadier, more acoustic beat that isolates his lyrics and displays the confidence of a rapper who has found his style. Malik proudly tells listeners to "speak up, step back when in my way", and says so with the assurance of a rapper who knows his strengths.
Malik chose the name "The Art of War to reflect on the rising tensions both in local communities here, and around the world.
With this project, Malik emphasizes the enduring struggles faced by those in the so-called "third world" and parts of Eastern Europe, such as war, displacement, death, and poverty. Malik seeks to foster genuine discussions within his community, aiming to gauge the collective sentiment regarding these pressing issues.
