In celebration of “the ultimate pop chameleon,” Mattel has released a David Bowie doll dressed as his sci-fi alter ego, Ziggy Stardust as part of their Gold Label Collection, to be sold for USD$50.00.
“It’s a definitive celebration of two pop culture icons, as Barbie honors the pioneer of sound and vision, English singer, songwriter, and actor, whose dramatic musical transformations continue to influence and inspire ” writes Mattel’s Allen Voivod.
Dressed in the iconic Ziggy Stardust metallic space suit, complete with stripes and flared shoulders, the doll comes with the astral sphere, bold makeup, and iconic red platform boots. The Bowie Barbie will come in specially-designed packaging adorned with a collage of early images from Bowie’s career.
Per Mattel’s collector terminology, as a Gold Label Collection doll, the quantity of Bowie Barbie dolls produced will be limited to 20,000 or less worldwide. It will also come with a stand and a certificate of authenticity.
Previous Gold Label Collection dolls range from holiday-related dolls such as the Shamrock Celebration and Yuletide Yummies Barbies, to pop culture icons such as the William and Catherine Royal Wedding Giftset, to designer collaborations like Moschino, Vera Wang, and Oscar de la Renta. David Bowie will be the first musician to be featured as a Gold Label Collection Barbie doll.

Mattel heralds the artist’s legend saying, “With a career spanning over five decades, David Bowie was at the vanguard of contemporary culture as a musician, artist, and icon. He was, and remains to be, a unique presence in contemporary culture.”
The announcement comes three years after the death of the star at age 69.
The initial release of the doll has already sold out, but notifications can be set up here regarding future production: https://barbie.mattel.com/shop/en-us/ba/barbie-david-bowie-doll-fxd84
