The English-Irish rapper’s latest and most experimental project will come out on July 24.
On July 24, English-Irish rapper and singer Maverick Sabre plans to release his latest EP, You Know How it Feels.
‘Signs,’ the first single from the EP, came out on June 26. Hot Press received a preview of the other three tracks on the EP, which are titled ‘Don’t You Know By Now,’ ‘In Your Head’ and ‘Waiting Game.’
On ‘Signs,’ Maverick Sabre explored his R&B influences, combining a choir-like refrain with a slow and solid beat. In a press release, Sabre said the song is about “purely overthinking, and wondering when you're in deep thought or contemplation and you get lost in it, who understands you.”
The rest of the EP is equally introspective: “Conceptually, it’s four moments of inner processing, overthinking and questioning what conditioning we take on and never let go of,” Sabre said.
But the fact that the EP’s four tracks share common themes does not make them repetitive. In each, Sabre tries on a different sound, adding experimental twists to the style of his last album, When I Wake Up.

‘Don’t You Know By Now’ takes inspiration from the 60s, with doo-wop style backing vocals and guitars processed to almost sound like sitars. In its second half, the song arrives in the 21st century as Maverick Sabre delivers a nimble rap verse.
‘In Your Head,’ the EP’s third track, sounds like it could have been made by a chart-topping indie band like Modest Mouse, while ‘Waiting Game’ evokes Ariel Pink in its laid-back, reverb-laden refrains.
Fans of Maverick Sabre will have to wait until July 24 to listen to You Know How it Feels in its entirety. For now, you can stream ‘Signs’ on Spotify below.
