Fred Avril is an anomaly in electronic music. Not clubby enough for the house and techno crowds or cool enough for the electroclash fashionistas, on Members, his second album, he still manages to create a work that’s more entertaining and experimental than most purist producers. With an approach to sampling that would put Akufen and Herbert to shame as well as a schizophrenic love of styles as diverse as electro, punk and sweet ambient pop – and a surefire chart hit in the shape of ‘Can’t Stand Your Ex’s Band’, Members‚ is the kind of daring free for all that modern electronic music so badly needs.
