Festival appearances in the UK, silver screen debuts… it’s all go for The Mighty Stef!
The Dubliner and his band are currently gearing up for appearances at Reading on August 27 and Leeds on August 29. His packed autumn schedule also includes dates in Norway, Germany and Italy as well as domestic appearances at the Ranelagh Arts Festival and Electric Picnic.

Three of his tracks are featured in Finola Geraghty’s film Come On Eileen, which had its premiere recently at the Galway Arts Festival. Stef also has a starring role as himself performing ‘Downtown’ and features alongside The Mighty Boosh’s Noel Fielding and Keith Allen…
Stef’s able henchmen Steve Fanning and Dan Fitzpatrick are also busy in their other guise, The Last Tycoons. The band release new single ‘Seven Days (Off The Road)’ for free download from August 27.
The self-titled debut ong-player, which was released in April, has received rave reviews and since then the band have been busy on the road, even managing to squeeze in a visit to SXSW. Catch them live at Electric Picnic (Salty Dog Stage on the Sunday); Sandino’s, Derry (September 10); and The Chestnut Bar, Birr (11) before they head off for their German tour (15 to 21)…
In other single news fellow Dubliners The Revelions recently unleashed ‘Sighs’ at a top-notch show in the Sweeney Mongrel. The track is an appetite-whetting taster for the second album which is scheduled for release later in the year. It’s the follow-up to 2008’s The Revellions, which was recorded in Cirrco Perrotti studios in Spain with Jorge Explosion and Mike Mariconda.
The band recently played the 100 Club for the UK launch of the single, a bold move considering they currently owe Her Royal Highness £1,974 in unpaid parking tickets from two UK tours!...
Dublin-based duo The Bull Munro (Tipperary man Danny Maher and Wicklow’s Rob McComlish) have just unveiled debut offering ‘Late November’, recorded in Envelope Studios and mastered in MasterLabs (see First Cuts). They’ve been gigging the length and breath of the country recently and even found the time to stop off and wow the Castlepalooza crowds. Will keep you updated on future live shows…
In advance of highly-anticipated long-player Boom (out August 27) Hogan have made new single ‘New York City’ available on downloadmusic.ie. The trio recorded their upcoming collection with Greg Haver of Manic Street Preachers fame. Impressively they’ve also signed a publishing deal with London company Respect Music and landed an endorsement with Lakewood Guitars. The guys recently played a high octane set for the warm-up of the Tiger Untamed Final. A live act not to miss!
Galway JD Set finalists The Coonics are set to release their debut 7” ‘Tasteless Joke’ on August 27. The following night’s launch will be in Canavan’s in Tuam. So far this year the band have accompanied The Saw Doctors on their UK tour, reached the final of the JD Set and received airplay on 2fm and Today FM...
Cork four-piece Time Is A Thief are gearing up for the release of their second EP Identity, recorded with Ciaran O’Shea of Cyclefly fame. This follows on from 2009’s well-received debut EP Conversations. The band have previously shared the stage with Twin Atlantic and Canterbury and played a blinding set recently at the Indiependence Festival. The launch is set for August 29 in The Pavillion…
On another EP note Youth Masss’s Misanthropy has just hit the streets. The nugget was recorded in K9 Studios in Dublin with Shane Cullen and mastered by Fred Kevorkian (Sonic Youth, The White Stripes) in New York. The Meath lads are currently working away on the follow-up single, due for an October release. Will keep you posted!
Dundalk quartet Blind Pilots release their double A-sided single in physical form on August 28. Since 2008’s lauded EP The Toys Have Gone Berserk the troupe have built up quite a following. Supports to date include Fight Like Apes, Ham Sandwich and Giveamanakick.
Check them out live on August 27 in The Brewery, Monaghan, the following night in The Spirit Store, September 17 in The Stables, Mullingar and supporting Fighting With Wire in Bakers Place Limerick on September 27...
The Cast Of Cheers showcased some new material at their recent show with Enemies in Whelan’s. Conor and co played a fantastic high energy set peppered with some excellent new tracks which bode very well for the next release. One of the finest domestic acts at the mo without a doubt!!!
