Time to watch The Last Song again...
In the ‘thank u, next’ era, a breakup isn’t complete until there’s a song to go with it. Well, Miley Cyrus just dropped an unannounced single, ‘Slide Away’ this morning, so it’s safe to say her rumoured split with husband Liam Hemsworth is the real deal this time.
Longtime fans will know that Cyrus’s 2013 album ‘Bangerz’ was largely about their first big breakup. But don’t expect another angered anthem à la ‘Wrecking Ball’. As Cyrus explains in her new single, she’s grown up, and that’s reflected both musically and lyrically in ‘Slide Away’.
“Move on we’re not seventeen / I’m not who I used to be / You say that everything changed / You’re right we’re grown now,” sings Cyrus over string-like synths and an electric guitar. The song closes with long tone strings and Cyrus ooh-ing along.
The lyrics of the song are revealing of the nature of the situation. Earlier this week, Cyrus posted photos from her trip to the Dolomites in Italy, subtly addressing the separation. "Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win," she wrote on Instagram. "Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa, change is inevitable. The Dolomites were not created over night, it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed."
Cyrus tweeted out a picture of her in the studio the following day, perhaps recording 'Slide Away'.

It's unclear whether the single, which was released by RCA Records, will be featured on her ongoing EP trilogy or if it's a standalone work. Earlier this summer, Cyrus released SHE IS COMING, the first EP of three she is putting together to create a full length album.
