Writer, artist and filmmaker Molly Crabapple is using her striking artistic skills to raise awareness about important societal issues, specifically racism and inequality in the US.
In November last year, Crabapple produced a 4 minute video explaining how the police force in Ferguson, St. Louis has deliberately and disproportionately targeted people of colour, and how this institutionalized racism is widespread in America, where a black male teen in 21 times more likely to be shot dead by police than his white counterpart.
Crabapple has produced a new video, again melding her beautiful art work with tragic stories and statistics for a hard-hitting and vital piece of work. This latest video focuses on the phenomenon of Broken Window policing, which causes police to target people of colour, particularly those who are poverty-stricken or oppressed.
Crabapple has become a vital voice in the artistic community, using her illustrations and short films as a form of artistic activism. Previously, Crapapple was involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement, making protest art and allowing her New York apartment to become an art headquarters for protesters. She has also used her art to address The Great Recession, as well as the 2012 Presidential election, focusing on the issues that drove debates, such as money, healthcare, race and gender.
