The Italian synthwave star urges listeners to surrender to their desires on his enchantingly elegant new single
Fresh from his epic performance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona this month, Mouth Water has finally unveiled his eagerly anticipated new single 'Blackout'.
The gloriously hedonistic track marks the beginning of an electrifying new chapter in the Italian producer and multi-instrumentalist's musical journey – as he skilfully pays homage to '80s and '90s electropop, and expands his own unique sonic horizons.
Originally kicking off his career in music as a sound engineer and bass player, Lawrence Fancelli – the mastermind behind Mouth Water – has rapidly built up a following by blending his skills as a live instrumentalist (on clarinet, bass and keys) with innovative electronic styles like synthwave and melodic house.
'Blackout' was produced by Mouth Water at his own OSB Studios, based in an old farmhouse in the stunning Tuscan countryside. The highly sought-after recording space has served as the central HQ for Mouth Water since Lawrence first launched the project in 2019.
Following collaborations with major names like Rhye and Lindstrøm, Mouth Water has secured his position as a serious force in electronic music – and his new track, released on Friday via Through The Void Records, marks another crucial step on his path to stardom.
'Blackout', which was mixed by Mark Yardley of Stanton Warriors, is a vibrant and immersive celebration of escapism and freedom – exploring the raw release experienced when the lights go out and the world fades aways. Boldly defying societal norms and expectations, the track's lyrics refer to a 'feral shadow', representing our darker, uninhibited selves that linger beneath the surface.
"I usually first come up with either a chord progression or get inspired by messing around with my analog synths," Mouth Water says of his creative process. "Then I build on top of that, experimenting and sometimes going down dead ends to find a sound that moves me. Then I come up with the vocal melodies, if any, and finally I write the lyrics trying to fit them into these melodies."
The artist has also stated that he's become "less afraid of making mistakes" in recent years – which has allowed him to forge a deeply authentic connection with fans of electronic music across the decades.
Mouth Water's next big focus is an Italian summer tour with Sophie and the Giants, as he continues to expand both his reputation as an unmissable live act, and his highly sophisticated approach to his artistry.
