The rapidly rising star released the Change EP via Through The Void earlier this year
Italian synthwave producer and multi-instrumentalist Mouth Water – also known as Lawrence Fancelli – cemented his reputation as a serious one-to-watch at Primavera Sound in Barcelona over the weekend, with a set that offered an exclusive preview of his electrifying new single 'Blackout', out June 21.
Surrounded by the fresh, positive vibes of the festival's iconic Island of Joy area, Saturday's set saw Mouth Water fusing his sophisticated skills as a live instrumentalist with electronic innovation, to craft a melodic house-inspired sound that's compellingly minimalist and introspective, yet irresistibly feel-good.
Lawrence spent years honing his production skills behind-the-scenes, working as a sound engineer and playing bass in bands in New York and in his native Florence, Italy. In 2013, he built his OSB Studio in an old farmhouse in the Tuscan countryside – which serves as a much sought-after commercial recording facility, as well as the base for his Mouth Water project. He released his debut album under the moniker in 2019, and has solidified his position in the electronic music sphere through collaborations with acclaimed artists like Rhye and Lindstrøm.
"I get musically inspired by being alone in the studio and playing with my gear and studying music theory," he explains. "I get lyrically inspired by paying attention to the world around me, what people say and new concepts I come across."
Mouth Water – who incorporates clarinet, bass and keyboards into his music – is now gearing up for a summer Italian tour with Sophie and the Giants.
"I love the innovation and freedom that electronic music enables," he says of his work, "especially in live situations where a single individual can perform an entire concert solo by creatively combining electronic and traditional instruments."
Mouth Water himself describes his "somewhat unusual" live show as "somewhere between a concert and a DJ set", and his Primavera Sound performance didn't disappoint – dazzling the dance-floor with his clarinet skills on 'Sixto' and 'Exit', as well as demonstrating his talents as a bassist on 'House' and 'For So Long', taken from his latest project, the Change EP.
Of course, in addition to his fan-favourite track 'Sleeping', one of the highlights of the set was his exclusive preview of his upcoming single 'Blackout' – offering a unique insight into his ability to fuse sounds that span decades, from '80s synthwave to the most groundbreaking ideas in contemporary electronic music.
Now over two decades in operation, Primavera Sound Barcelona remains one of the most prestigious festivals on the summer calendar, welcoming some of the biggest and most innovative names in international music. Mouth Water's inclusion on the line-up serves as a major landmark moment in what's already been a remarkable career, as Lawrence sets his sights on world domination – in his own effortlessly organic and elegant style.
Stay tuned for the release of 'Blackout' later this month – marking an exciting new chapter in Mouth Water's artistic journey.
